The Welli Deli

Yesterday was greatly looked forward to by William, James and I for many reasons; Will because he got to spend the day with his best friend Taylor, James because he got to spend the day without Will and myself because I'd decided to spend the day doing as little as possible.

After Will had set off for Taylor's, James and I jumped in the Mazda and headed off as planned to The Wellington Arms for lunch. They had a wonderful spread of homemade quiches, pies and incredible sausage rolls along with sourdough loaves, cakes, flans - you name it, as well as a wide range of home grown vegetables you can take home. Then you have the option to stay and eat either in the restaurant proper, or choose from the cafe menu. We'd come this far...so we both went for deep fried courgette flowers in tempura batter from the Welli Deli cafe, washed down with a Fever Tree lime and soda.

Well the size of those flowers - they were huge. The batter light as a cloud, sprinkled with the thinnest slivers of parmesan and a fresh green salad with flower petals on the side. Absolutely delicious. We sat outside in the garden surrounded by raised beds, fruit trees and a raft of blue tits darting in and out of the bird feeders. Eating slowly was impossible, the plates were demolished.

Then we had a stroll through the poly tunnel where they grow some of the vegetables, looked at their bee hives and the sheep before collecting our box of sausage rolls, jammy dodgers and a jar of green tomato chutney and heading back to the ranch.

As promised, IT was the next action item on the agenda. It was very different from the book, but scary enough thank you very much. James renamed our bag of popcorn 'trauma corn' as we gobbled mouthfuls every time Pennywise made some horrific appearance.

The day ended with a dusk dog walk and then a zip over to fish a sunburnt Will out of Taylor's swimming pool. He'd had an amazing time. I'm so pleased he managed to get away and spend the day with his mate just having loads of fun. Suffice to say we did not see him for breakfast until very late this morning...
